Modals of deduction

¿Para qué se usa?

Se utilizan los verbos modales en una situación en la que necesitamos cierto nivel de deducción, lo que significa que decimos qué tan seguros estamos de algo.

Must. Usamos must cuando estamos seguros de que algo es cierto porque tenemos información sobre la situación, tenemos pruebas sólidas. 

Ejemplos:

• She must live close to where she works because she walks to work.
• You’ve been working in the garden all day. 
• Being a sky diving instructor must be very exciting.

Might, May, Could. Se utiliza might, may o could para decir que pensamos que algo es posible, pero no estamos seguros.

Ejemplos:

• We’ll try to get there early but we may arrive late if there’s a lot of traffic.
• Don’t put it up there. It could fall off and hit someone.
• Did you hear that? I think there might be a burglar downstairs.

Can't. Es utilizado para cuando es imposible que algo ocurra.

Ejemplos:

• It can’t be a mechanical problem. I've just taken the car to a mechanic. 
• They can't be very happy about working during the night.
• It can’t be a burglar. All the doors and windows are locked.
• It can’t be far away now. We’ve been driving for hours. Where’s the map?
